Book Review: The Compass Solution

THE COMPASS SOLUTION

By: Tim Cole

Everybody has a plan until they get hit in the face.” ~ Mike Tyson

The Compass Solution is a guide for career seekers looking to land their first position, get promoted or land their next dream job written by Tim Cole, CEO of The Compass Alliance.

The Book is easy to read, filled with great analogies and “Straight Talk” advice that gives the reader the tough love advice they need to hear to move forward. The Compass proposes that to get ahead of one’s peers careerwise, you need to understand and work on four areas:

  • Personal Accountability
  • People
  • Process
  • Perspective

These 4 Ps are nothing extraordinary and have been suggested by many career experts in the past but the Compass Solution’s main differentiator is the constant focus that YOU are the key to success and only you are accountable for your actions (or lack of).

“It begins with you” is how Tim starts off the chapters devoted to Personal Accountability and he uses an analogy of you being a “Hiker” on this journey. This is a great visual as he powerfully points out that “You’ll start and end your corporate journey alone”.

The People are the “Hikers” along your career journey that can mentor, guide and if one is not careful, harm one’s chances of advancing. Tim stresses that one should not simply remember names or faces but truly forge lasting relationships to help guide and support you.

The Process is the weather and other nuances and is perhaps the most important area. One needs to completely understand how the business operates including the office politics to stand out. To do this, ask the following:

  • Where am I?
  • How did I get there?
  • Where do I want to be?
  • How will I get there?
  • What results should I expect and when?

Perspective is how you choose to look at the above. It’s the story you tell yourself and Tim speaks about an “Adversity Formula” to combat and overcome the hardships in your career journey.

The Compass Solution is an excellent resource for new career seekers all the way to experienced senior level professionals.

It’s the type of guide one needs be successful. Straightforward, easy to apply and tough love.
