Stop Blaming Glassdoor for Your Company’s Poor Reviews

Today, everything’s become transparent and visible to the public eye—and this includes the dynamics within any given company. With review sites like Glassdoor, it’s become simple for any candidate to quickly figure out whether or not they would like to even consider applying to work at your company.

Now this may seem unfair because it may not represent the entire truth, and it is possible that a few disgruntled employees happened to leave poor reviews of your company, forcing a poor perception in the public eye.

Many business owners claim that the reviews are inaccurate and even fake. One thing you need to realize, however, is that Glassdoor has gotten to where it currently is through its reliability. If all great companies were victims of fake negative reviews on their site, then Glassdoor would not be recognized the way it is today.

A second and equally important point to remember is that no one cares about or trusts what your company website has to say about how incredible the atmosphere at your fine establishment is and how bright, progressive and friendly the team is. Let’s face it—no one in their right mind would write, “We’re a mediocre company with a slightly above average team hoping to be profitable by next year.”

Think about it this way, you go to Yelp to find out whether or not you’re willing to give the new Italian restaurant down the street a try, so how can you blame a candidate for doing any research they can before making one of the most important decisions of their life?

If you’re not finding the level of candidates you’re hoping for, it may be time for some introspection. Whether you operate a new or well-established company, be sure to pay attention to your company’s public profile because online review sites are here to stay and the glass door into your office is only going to get more transparent.
