How to Tell If The Candidate May Be Lying

When interviewing, here is a simple rule of thumb to tell if the candidate may be lying:

Lying – Responses are GENERALIZED:

  • “It was a good company to work for.”
  • “My team and I always achieved our sales goals.”
  • “The location we visited was warm.”

Truth – Responses are SPECIFIC:

  • “I enjoyed my time there. We were allowed to work flexible hours and occasionally from home. I am proud to say that I am friends with many of my previous co-workers still.”
  • “I overachieved my sales quotas by 110% by boosting revenues by over $1.2M.”
  • “I love Jamaica! We stayed at Ocho Rios in the Rui Resort. Our favourite moment was walking the Dunn’s River Falls.”
